Painter Statement

I am Tianyi Wang, as known as Henry, a painter. I work primarily with acrylic and oil on canvas, exploring the interplay of structure and color through my personal lens. My preferred format is a 2:1 ratio, often realized in large-scale dimensions such as 180cm x 90cm—a size that linked with my physical body and allows me to fully drown myself in the act of creation.

My work is an intimate exploration of emotion and language, a visual dialogue that reflects my inner world. I see my paintings as an extension of my own language—a medium through which I articulate the ineffable. I am not concerned with aligning myself with any particular artistic movement or "ism"; instead, I focus on the raw beauty and tension that emerge from the organization of brushstrokes on canvas.

Rooted in my Chinese cultural heritage, I put great emphasis on the concept of "negative space" or "留白" (liú bái) , I will also call it the mind of knowing when to begin and when to stop. This philosophy informs my approach to composition, where every stroke and every void carries equal significance. In this sense, I define my work as a modern interpretation of Chinese painting, bridging traditional sensibilities with contemporary expression.

For me, painting is not merely an act of creation but a continuous negotiation between beauty and imperfection, structure and spontaneity, presence and absence.

I sew myself in my works.
